lymph nodes Small, bean-shaped organs located throughout the lymphatic system. The lymph nodes store special cells that can trap cancer cells or bacteria that are traveling through the body in lymph. Also called lymph glands.
(12 Dec 1998)
lymph nodes of abdominal organs The numerous lymph nodes receiving lymph from abdominal organs located in association with the visceral branches of the aorta.
Synonym: nodi lymphatici abdominis viscerales.
(05 Mar 2000)
lymph nodes of elbow Two groups of nodes, superficial and deep, lying along the basilic vein above the medial epicondyle; they receive afferents from the ulnar side of the forearm and hand, and send efferents to the brachial nodes.
Synonym: nodi lymphatici cubitales, epitrochlear nodes, lymph nodes of elbow.
(05 Mar 2000)
lymph nodule Lymphatic follicle, one of the spherical masses of lymphoid cells, frequently having a more lightly staining centre.
See: solitary lymphatic follicles, Peyer's patches.
Synonym: folliculus lymphaticus, lymph nodule, nodulus lymphaticus.
(05 Mar 2000)
lymph sacs The earliest lymphatic vessels formed in the embryo.
(05 Mar 2000)
lymph scrotum Brawny swelling of the scrotum as a result of chronic lymphatic obstruction.
Synonym: chyloderma, lymph scrotum, parasitic chylocele.
(05 Mar 2000)
lymph sinus The channels in a lymph node crossed by a reticulum of cells and fibres and bounded by littoral cells; there are subcapsular, trabecular, and medullary sinus's.
Synonym: lymph sinus.
Maier's sinus, an infundibuliform depression on the internal surface of the lacrimal sac which receives the lacrimal canaliculi.
Marginal sinuses of placenta, discontinuous venous lakes at the margin of the placenta.
(05 Mar 2000)
lymph space A space, in tissue or a vessel, filled with lymph.
(05 Mar 2000)
lymph varix The formation of varices or cysts in the lymph nodes in consequence of obstruction in the efferent lymphatics.
(05 Mar 2000)
lymph vessels The vessels that convey the lymph; they anastomose freely with each other.
Synonym: vasa lymphatica, absorbent vessels, lymphatic vessels, lymphatics.
(05 Mar 2000)
accelerator factor <chemical> Heat- and storage-labile plasma glycoprotein which accelerates the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin in blood coagulation. Factor v accomplishes this by forming a complex with factor xa, phospholipid, and calcium (prothrombinase complex). Deficiency of factor v leads to owren's disease.
Chemical name: Blood-coagulation factor V
(12 Dec 1998)
acetate replacement factor <biochemistry> 1,2 dithiolane 3 valeric acid. Regarded as a coenzyme in the oxoglutarate dehydrogenase complex of the citric acid cycle. Involved generally in oxidative decarboxylations of _ keto acids. A growth factor for some organisms.
(18 Nov 1997)
adrenal weight factor A postulated substance of adenohypophysial origin responsible for maintenance of the weight of the adrenal cortex.
(05 Mar 2000)
adrenocorticotropic releasing factor Hormone produced by hypothalamus that causes pituitary to secrete adrenocorticotropic hormone.
(05 Mar 2000)
a-factor <molecular biology> A protein which is found in the bacterial genus Streptomyces that helps start the production of streptomycin and the process of morphological differentiation.
It is used in biotechnology to induce these functions in mutant strains of Streptomyces that cannot produce it themselves.
