a small, irregularly stellate, acidophilic cell of the adenohypophysis, having small, sparsely distributed secretory granules and secreting corticotropin and β-endorphin, which are cleaved from a large prohormone called pro-opiomelanocortin. Called also corticotrope, corticotroph-lipotroph, corticolipotrope, corticotrope cell, and corticotroph cell.
