A table showing the joint or compound frequencies of occurrence of two or more variables or attributes. The simplest example is the so-called fourfold table in which two attributes A and B are each divided into two classes, say A 1 , A 2 , and B 1 , B 2 , thus giving rise to four possible combinations: (A 1 , B 1 ), (A 1 , B 2 ), (A 2 , B 1 ), and (A 2 , B 2 ). The contingency table then displays the frequency of each of the four combinations.

| continuity |
The property of a field such that neighboring values of a parameter differ only by an arbitrarily small amount if they are close enough in space and/or time. In synoptic meteorology, continuity of a field is interpreted as requiring a certain smoothness of analysis and a similar adjustment in the time sequence of synoptic charts. Compare discontinuity.
