tracheomalacia a congenital weakness and floppiness of the walls of the trachea (main airway) caused by a defect in the rings made of cartilage that keep the trachea open. Manifestations would include: stridor breathing, hoarseness, and difficulty feeding. Tracheostomy - an operation in which an opening is made into the trachea and a tube is inserted to maintain an effective airway.
