Located anterior to and above heart, it consists of two flattened symmetrical lobes. At birth, average weight of thymus is thirteen grams. Growth is rapid for two years, then slow, obtaining weight of about thirty grams at puberty, after which it begins to atrophy and thymic tissue is replaced with fat and connective tissue.
