an acute, flea-borne endemic infectious disease clinically similar to but milder than epidemic typhus; caused by Rickettsia typhi, which is transmitted from rats to humans chiefly by the rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis. Infections identical or nearly identical to murine typhus have been known by various names, including Congo red fever, Manchurian, Mexican, or Moscow t., and tabardillo or tarbadillo.
