| phthalein test | An obsolete test for renal function; after the patient has drunk a glass or two of water, 1 ml of a 0.6% solution of dye is injected hypodermically; the time between this injection and the appearance of a pink tinge in the urine as it falls into an alkaline solution is noted; the amount excreted in each of the next 2 hours is then estimated colourimetrically. Synonym: Geraghty's test, phthalein test, red test, Rowntree and Geraghty test. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mixed lymphocyte culture test | Measure of histocompatibility at the hl-a locus. Peripheral blood lymphocytes from two individuals are mixed together in tissue culture for several days. Lymphocytes from incompatible individuals will stimulate each other to proliferate significantly (measured by tritiated thymidine uptake) whereas those from compatible individuals will not. In the one-way mlc test, the lymphocytes from one of the individuals are inactivated (usually by treatment with mitomycin c or radiation) thereby allowing only the untreated remaining population of cells to proliferate in response to foreign histocompatibility antigens. (12 Dec 1998) |
| MLC test | Measure of histocompatibility at the hl-a locus. | Waldenstrom's test | A test for porphyrin in the urine; 2 ml of urine are mixed with an equal amount of 2% dimethyl-p-aminobenzaldehyde in 50/100 HCl. A red colour appears if urobilinogen (Ehrlich's benzaldehyde reaction) or porphobilinogen is present. (05 Mar 2000) |
| coccidioidin test | An intracutaneous test for determining the presence of infection with the fungus Coccidioides immitis; a reaction of delayed hypersensitivity indicates a positive test and is interpreted as meaning past or present infection with the fungus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Wang's test | A quantitative test for indican, which is transformed into indigo-sulfuric acid and then titrated by a solution of potassium permanganate. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Molisch's test | A colour test for sugar, which condenses with alpha-naphthol or thymol in the presence of strong sulfuric acid, which converts the sugar to furfural derivatives. (05 Mar 2000) |
