a genus of gram-negative, anaerobic, nonsporulating bacteria of the family Bacteroidaceae, consisting of slender cells with tapered ends that are normal inhabitants of the cavities of humans and animals. Some species are pathogenic, causing purulent or gangrenous infections. Formerly called Fusiformis.
