| Entamoeba histolytica |
A protozoa most prevalent in Central and South America, India and Africa. Infection can cause invasive colitis, intestinal perforation, peritonitis and liver abscess. Many infected patients are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms. Diagnosis is made by stool samples. A serologic test is nearly always positive in an infected patient with symptoms, especially if the patient has a liver abscess. Metronidazol is the drug most often used for the treatment of amebiasis.
