case-control study a study in which patients with a certain condition are matched with patients who do not have the condition. The two groups are then compared with respect to certain risk factors (eg patients with lung cancer asked about cigarette smoking). Advantages include rapid study time, since the outcome of interest has already occurred, and ease, since no special methods to recruit cases and controls are necessary.
