a compound, CaCN2, which inhibits one or more of the enzymes required for oxidation of acetaldehyde formed from alcohol; used as a fertilizer, defoliant, herbicide, and pesticide. Drinking of alcohol after inhalation or ingestion of calcium cyanamide causes unpleasant symptoms (see mal rouge); thus it has been used to treat alcoholism, usually in a mixture with citric acid (citrated c. carbimide). Called also c. carbimide and cyanamide.
