thermostat
Air conditioners are controlled by thermostats which act as switches. When the thermostat calls for cooling it turns the air conditioner on. When the thermostat is satisfied it turns the air conditioner off. Setting the thermostat to a lower temperature will not make it cool any faster.

thermoluminescence
A dating technique that relies indirectly on radioactive decay, overlapping with radiocarbon in the time period for which it is useful, but also has the potential for dating earlier periods. It has much in common with electron spin resonance (ESR).

thermoplastic
Linear plastics of finite molecular weight that can be fabricated in a complex shape by melting and injection moulding.

thermal
a small rising parcel of warm air produced when the earth's surface is unevenly heated. A thermal forms when air molecules bounce against the earth's hot surface, absorb heat, and becomes lighter than the surrounding air, which allows it to rise. These thermals "bubble" upward to transfer energy to higher levels of the atmosphere.
