a type of intracutaneous tuberculin test; the needle points of the Sterneedle are dipped into 1 to 2 drops of tuberculin PPD, then placed on the forearm and made to penetrate the skin, through the PPD solution, to a depth of 1 mm, thus depositing tuberculin in the outer layer of the skin. Palpable, coalescing induration (edema) extending more than 5 mm around the puncture wounds in three to seven days indicates a positive reaction. Called Heaf t. in England.
