A treatment that kills cancer cells by exposing them to x-rays. The x-rays may come from a machine outside the body that is directed to a specific part of the body (external radiation). Or, radioactive material can be placed directly into or near a tumor (implant radiation). Radiation kills all cells with which it comes in contact, cancer cells as well as normal cells.
