a normal variate having mean 5 and standard deviation 1. In quantal biologic assays, the observed responses are often converted to probits (the fraction responding is converted to the probit that cuts off the same fraction of the area under the normal frequency curve) in order to fit a linear log doseresponse curve, a procedure based on the assumption that the response thresholds are normally distributed.
