mammalian type B r.’es a genus having a characteristic dense core 40–60 nm in diameter enclosed by a membranous envelope 90–120 nm in diameter with prominent surface spikes; capsid assembly occurs in the cytoplasm prior to budding from the plasma membrane. It contains a single species, mouse mammary tumor virus.
