A true hologram is created optically with laser light. Holograms are very difficult to copy or simulate without sophisticated, expensive equipment and much expertise. They are very effective for authentication of genuine articles or protection against forgery. They generally are much more expensive than other security features, depending on the manufacturer, but may be needed for birth certificates, some licenses and immigration papers. Holographic tape and foil are less costly alternatives.

is the storage of the information of a light beam in an interference pattern. For recording, an image-bearing beam (=image or signal beam) is made to interfere with a second beam (reference beam) in the recording medium. Via a conventional photographic plate or the refractive index modulation in a photorefractive crystal, the interference pattern can be recorded.
