This refers to lithotripsy, and is sometimes called ESWL. This is a large machine that generates a powerful shock wave using one of several different technologies. The generator is outside the body but the shock waves are focused at a point where the stones are located. Probably the most commonly used tool to fragment kidney stones today.

The material outside cells which provides support and structure to tissue. Consists of ground substance and fibers. The ground substance is an amorphous gel-like material that fills the space between the cells and contains interstitial fluid and proteoglycans. The fibers consist of collagen, elastin, and reticular fibers, the amounts and proportions of which vary depending on the type of tissue being scrutinised.

External or a cause coming from outside. In this type of asthma, the cause of an attack is normally the inhalation of an allergen. Extrinsic asthma is more likely than intrinsic to start in childhood, and often the trigger(s) can be identified and dealt with. In extrinsic asthma, the reaction of the airways is like an allergic reaction, and is similar to hayfever and other allergies.
