van't Hoff's l. 1. a substance in solution exerts an osmotic pressure equal to the gas pressure that it would exert if its molecules were in a gaseous state and occupied a volume equal to that of the solution under the same conditions of temperature and pressure.  2. van't Hoff's rule.

van't Hoff's r. the velocity of chemical reactions is increased twofold or more for each rise of 10°C in temperature; it is generally true when temperatures approximate those under which the reaction normally occurs. Called also van't Hoff's law. See also temperature coefficient, under coefficient.
