sodium-potassium pump A membrane-bound transporter that maintains the high potassium and low sodium intracellular concentrations relative to the extracellular medium. This exchange is accomplished at the expense of cellular energy in the form of ATP.
(05 Mar 2000)
sodium-potassium-exchanging atpase <enzyme> An enzyme that catalyses the active transport system of sodium and potassium ions across the cell wall. Sodium and potassium ions are closely coupled with membrane atpase which undergoes phosphorylation and dephosphorylation, thereby providing energy for transport of these ions against concentration gradients.
Chemical name: ATP phosphohydrolase (sodium-potassium-transporting)
Registry number: EC 3.6.1.37
(12 Dec 1998)
sodium-responsive periodic paralysis A form of periodic paralysis in which the serum potassium level is within normal limits during attacks; onset usually occurs between the ages of 2 and 5 years; there is often severe quadriplegia, usually improved by the administration of sodium salts; autosomal dominant inheritance.
Synonym: sodium-responsive periodic paralysis.

sodium-translocating NADH-quinone reductase <enzyme> From vibrio alginolyticus; na+ dependent activation is located in the NADH-quinone reductase segment; reduces ubiquinone-1 to ubisemiquinones or ubiquinol; strongly inhibited by 2-n-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline n-oxide; do not confuse with sodium independent NADH-quinone reductase EC 1.6.99.2
Registry number: EC 1.6.5.-
Synonym: nqr-1, na-translocating NADH-quinone reductase, nqr gene product

Soemmerring's ganglion A large cell mass, crescentic on transverse section, extending forward over the dorsal surface of the crus cerebri from the rostral border of the pons into the subthalamic region; it is composed of a dorsal stratum of closely spaced pigmented (i.e., melanin-containing) cells, the pars compacta, and a larger ventral region of widely scattered cells, the pars reticulata; the pars compacta in particular includes numerous cells that project forward to the striatum (caudate nucleus and putamen) and contain dopamine, which acts as the transmitter substance at their synaptic endings; other, apparently non-dopaminergic cells of the substantia nigra project to a rostral part of the ventral nucleus of thalmus, the middle layers of the superior colliculus and to restricted parts of the reticular formation of the midbrain; the nigrostriatal projection is reciprocated by a massive striatonigral fibre system with multiple neurotransmitters, chief among which is gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA); substantia n. Receives smaller afferent projections from the subthalamic nucleus, the lateral segment of the globus pallidus, the dorsal nucleus of the raphe and the pedunculopontine nucleus of the midbrain. The pars reticulata forms part of the output system for the striate body. The substantia n. Is involved in the metabolic disturbances associated with Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease.
Synonym: locus niger, nucleus niger, Soemmerring's ganglion.

(05 Mar 2000)
Soemmerring's muscle A fasciculus occasionally passing from the thyrohyoid muscle to the isthmus of the thyroid gland.
Synonym: musculus levator glandulae thyroideae, elevator muscle of thyroid gland, Soemmerring's muscle.
(05 Mar 2000)
Soemmerring's spot An oval area of the sensory retina, 3 by 5 mm, temporal to the optic disk corresponding to the posterior pole of the eye; at its centre is the central fovea, which contains only retinal cones.
Synonym: area centralis, macula lutea, macular area, punctum luteum, Soemmerring's spot, yellow spot.
