histoplasmosis a disease caused by a fungal organism which is commonly found in the soil in many areas of the United States, especially the Midwest. There are two basic types of histoplasmosis: systemic (when histoplasmosis organisms are inhaled) and ocular (when neovascularization occurs through healed histoplasmosis scars).
