| glutamate decarboxylase |
[EC 4.1.1.15] an enzyme of the lyase class that catalyzes the decarboxylation of glutamate to form γ-aminobutyrate (GABA). The enzyme is a pyridoxal phosphate protein, and the reaction occurs within the mitochondria in kidney, and outside the mitochondria in brain. Deficiency of the brain enzyme may be the cause of convulsions that begin in infancy and are responsive to pyridoxine therapy.

| glutamate dehydrogenase [NAD(P)+] |
[EC 1.4.1.3] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the oxidative deamination of glutamate to form α-ketoglutarate, using either NAD+ or NADP+as an electron acceptor. The reversible reaction has a major function in both synthesis and degradation of glutamic acid and, via transaminases, other amino acids as well.
