| MGN | medial geniculate nucleus; membranous glomerulonephritis |
| MIN | medial interlaminar nucleus |
| MSN | main sensory nucleus; Master of Science in Nursing; mildly subnormal |
| nucleus ambiguus | A very slender, longitudinal column of motor neurons in the ventrolateral medulla oblongata; its efferent fibres leave with the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerve and innervate the striated muscle fibres of the pharynx (including the musculus levator veli palatini) and the vocal cord muscles of the larynx. Synonym: ambiguous nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |

| nucleus amygdalae | Almond-shaped group of basal nuclei anterior to the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle of the brain, within the temporal lobe. The amygdala is part of the limbic system. (12 Dec 1998) |
| nucleus anterodorsalis | nucleus anterodorsalis |
| nucleus anteromedialis | nucleus anteromedialis |
| nucleus anteroventralis | nucleus anteroventralis |
| nucleus arcuatus | The small ventral region of the ventral posteromedial nucleus of thalamus in which the fibres of the gustatory lemniscus and secondary trigeminal tracts terminate; it projects to the lower part of the postcentral gyrus of the cerebral cortex. Synonym: arcuate nucleus, nucleus arcuatus thalami, nucleus arcuatus, semilunar nucleus of Flechsig, thalamic gustatory nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus arcuatus thalami | The small ventral region of the ventral posteromedial nucleus of thalamus in which the fibres of the gustatory lemniscus and secondary trigeminal tracts terminate; it projects to the lower part of the postcentral gyrus of the cerebral cortex. Synonym: arcuate nucleus, nucleus arcuatus thalami, nucleus arcuatus, semilunar nucleus of Flechsig, thalamic gustatory nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus basalis of Ganser | A large group of large cells in the innominate substance, ventral to the lentiform nucleus. Synonym: nucleus basalis of Ganser. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus caudatus | Elongated gray mass of the neostriatum located adjacent to the lateral ventricle of the brain. (12 Dec 1998) |
| nucleus centralis lateralis thalami | The most lateral of the intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus. Synonym: nucleus centralis lateralis thalami. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus centralis tegmenti superior | One of the nuclei raphes. Synonym: Bechterew's nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus centromedianus | A large, lentil-shaped cell group, the largest and most caudal of the intralaminar nuclei, located within the lamina medullaris interna of the thalamus between the mediodorsal nucleus and ventrobasal nucleus; so called by Luys because of its prominent appearance on frontal sections midway between the anterior and posterior pole of the human thalamus. The nucleus receives numerous fibres from the internal segment of the globus pallidus by way of the thalamic fasciculus, ansa lenticularis, and lenticular fasciculus as well as projections from area 4 of the motor cortex; its major efferent connection is with the putamen although collaterals reach broad areas of the cerebral cortex. Synonym: nucleus centromedianus, centre median de Luys, centrum medianum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus colliculi inferioris | The nerve cell groups composing the colliculus inferior. Synonym: nucleus colliculi inferioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus corporis geniculati medialis | The nerve cell groups composing the medial geniculate body (corpus geniculatum mediale). Synonym: nucleus corporis geniculati medialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus cuneatus | The larger Burdach's nucleus; one of the three nuclei of the posterior column of the spinal cord; located near the dorsal surface of the medulla oblongata at and below the level of the obex, the nucleus receives posterior root fibres corresponding to the sensory innervation of the arm and hand of the same side; together with its medial companion, the gracile nucleus, it is the major source of origin of the medial lemniscus. Synonym: nucleus cuneatus, Burdach's nucleus, nucleus funiculi cuneati, nucleus of cuneate fasciculus. (05 Mar 2000) |
