a chronic confined inflammatory response of bone to low-grade infection, with formation of dense trabecular bony masses with little interstitial marrow tissue. It occurs particularly in the mandible of children and young adults, adjacent to the apex of a tooth with long-term pulpitis. Called also condensing osteitis.
