| facies superior hemispherii cerebelli | It lies against the under surface of the tentorium and includes the ala lobuli centralis, quadrangular lobule, simple lobule, and superior semilunar lobule. Synonym: facies superior hemispherii cerebelli. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies superior tali | The surface of the trochlea of the talus in contact with the inferior articular surface of the tibia. Synonym: facies superior tali. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies superolateralis cerebri | The aspect of the cerebral hemisphere that lies in contact with the flat bones of the skull; it includes parts of the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes. Synonym: facies superolateralis cerebri, cortical convexity, superolateral cerebral surface. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies symphysialis | facies symphysialis |
| facies temporalis | The surface of a bone which contributes to the temporal fossa, namely, the greater wing of the sphenoid, the squamous part of the temporal, frontal and zygomatic bones. Synonym: facies temporalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies urethralis penis | The surface of the penis opposite to the dorsum penis. Synonym: facies urethralis penis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies vesicalis uteri | The surface of the uterus facing the bladder and separated from it by the uterovesical pouch of peritoneum. Synonym: facies vesicalis uteri. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies vestibularis dentis | The surface of a tooth that faces the buccal or labial mucosa of vestibule of the mouth; opposite to the lingual surface of tooth. Synonym: facies vestibularis dentis, facies facialis dentis, buccal surface, facial surface of tooth, facies buccalis, facies labialis, labial surface. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies visceralis hepatis | The posteroinferior surface of the liver that faces adjacent abdominal organs; the porta hepatis and gallbladder are located on this surface. Synonym: facies visceralis hepatis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies visceralis splenis | The surface of the spleen in contact with adjacent viscera. Synonym: facies visceralis splenis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facilitated diffusion | <physiology> A process by which substances are conveyed across cell membranes faster than would be possible by diffusion alone. This is generally achieved by proteins that provide a hydrophilic environment for polar molecules throughout their passage through the plasma membrane, acting as either shuttles or pores. See: symport, antiport, uniport. (18 Nov 1997) |
| facilitated transport | The protein-mediated transport of a compound across a biomembrane that is not ion-driven; a saturable transport system. Synonym: passive transport. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facilitation | <physiology> Greater effectiveness of synaptic transmission by successive presynaptic impulses, usually due to increased transmitter release. (18 Nov 1997) |
| facilitator neuron | <physiology> A neuron whose firing enhances the effect of a second neuron on a third. This allows the effects of neuronal activity to be modulated. (18 Nov 1997) |
| facial h. |
the linear measurement of portions of the face, in the midline, using specified reference points; see anterior, upper, lower, and posterior facial heights, and see illustration. Click here to view image■Facial height. Anterior facial height is the sum of upper and lower facial heights, the lower limit of the latter variously defined as the pogonion, gnathion or menton. Posterior facial height is often measured from the gonion to the condylare, sella, or center of face point. A, subspinale; ANS, anterior nasal spine; B, supramentale; Cd, condylare; CF, center of face; Gn, gnathion; Go, gonion; M, menton; N, nasion; O,orbitale; Pg, pogonion; Po, porion; S, sella.

| facial h., anterior |
the linear distance from the nasion to the bottom of the chin, the precise point variously specified as the pogonion, gnathion, or menton. It is subdivided into upper and lower facial h. See also illustration.

|
| facial h., lower |
the linear distance between the chin, specified as either the menton, gnathion, or pogonion, and the region of the teeth, usually the anterior nasal spine or the interdentale inferius. See illustration.

|
| facial h., posterior |
a quite variable measure of the linear height of the face in the region of the ear. The most common measure is between a point on the inferior border of the mandible, generally the gonion, and the condylare, sella, or a point defined as the center facial point. Other measurements of height exist, some involving lines of intersection drawn between major facial planes. See illustration.

|
| facial h., upper |
the linear distance between the nasion and a point in the region of the maxillary teeth, usually the anterior nasal spine but sometimes the interdentale superius or prosthion. See illustration.
