| BMP | bone morphogenetic protein |
|---|---|
| BMT | Bachelor of Medical Technology; basement membrane thickening; benign mesenchymal tumor; bone marrow ... |
| BRA | bilateral renal agenesis; bone-resorbing activity; brain-reactive antibody |
| BRF | bone-resorbing factor |
| BRU | bone remodeling unit |
| body surface potential mapping | Recording of regional electrophysiological information by analysis of surface potentials to give a complete picture of the effects of the currents from the heart on the body surface. It has been applied to the diagnosis of old inferior myocardial infarction, localization of the bypass pathway in wolff-parkinson-white syndrome, recognition of ventricular hypertrophy, estimation of the size of a myocardial infarct, and the effects of different interventions designed to reduce infarct size. The limiting factor at present is the complexity of the recording and analysis, which requires 100 or more electrodes, sophisticated instrumentation, and dedicated personnel. (12 Dec 1998) |

| buccal surface | The mucosa of the cheek, in prosthodontics, the side of a denture adjacent to the cheek. Synonym: vestibular surface of tooth. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Calculus Surface Index | An index that measures only dental calculus, used for evaluating new calculus formation within a large group of test subjects. (05 Mar 2000) |
| radiation damage, surface | <radiobiology> General term describing damage to the surface of the containment structure which directly interfaces with the thermonuclear plasma, includes such phenomena as radiation blistering, charged-particle (or neutron) sputtering, and spallation or exfoliation of layers of the surface. (09 Oct 1997) |
| variable surface glycoprotein | <protein> One of a battery of antigenicdeterminants expressed by a microorganism to elude immune detection. (09 Oct 1997) |
| variant surface glycoproteins, trypanosoma | Glycoproteins attached to the surface coat of the trypanosome. Many of these glycoproteins show amino acid sequence diversity expressed as antigenic variations. This continuous development of antigenically distinct variants in the course of infection ensures that some trypanosomes always survive the development of immune response to propagate the infection. | palmar surface | The palm or grasping side of the hand. (12 Dec 1998) |
| palmar surface of fingers | The flat of the fingers; the flexor or anterior surface of the fingers. Synonym: facies digitalis ventralis, facies digitalis palmaris, ventral surface of digit. (05 Mar 2000) |
| gastric surface of spleen | The surface of the spleen in contact with the stomach. Synonym: facies gastrica splenis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| rational surface | <physics> Magnetic flux surface where the ratio of toroidal to poloidal field strengths is a rational number, this means that a particle travelling along this surface makes an integer number of turns in each direction and then its orbit closes in on itself. The result is that the particle does not sample the entire flux surface in its motion, which is important for various technical reasons (which mostly result in reduced confinement). See: magnetic island. (09 Oct 1997) |
| ventral surface of digit | The flat of the fingers; the flexor or anterior surface of the fingers. Synonym: facies digitalis ventralis, facies digitalis palmaris, ventral surface of digit. (05 Mar 2000) |
| receptors, cell surface | Cell surface proteins that bind signalling molecules external to the cell with high affinity and convert this extracellular event into one or more intracellular signals that alter the behaviour of the target cell. Cell surface receptors, unlike enzymes, do not chemically alter their ligands. (12 Dec 1998) |
| vertebral part of the costal surface of the lungs | The part of the medial surface of the lung in contact with the vertebral bodies. Synonym: pars vertebralis faciei costalis pulmonis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vesical surface of uterus | The surface of the uterus facing the bladder and separated from it by the uterovesical pouch of peritoneum. Synonym: facies vesicalis uteri. (05 Mar 2000) |
| masticating surface | That portion of the surface of a denture that makes contact or near contact with the corresponding surface of an opposing denture or tooth. Synonym: facies occlusalis dentis, facies masticatoria, grinding surface, masticating surface, masticatory surface, occlusal surface. (05 Mar 2000) |
