| xanthine oxidase |
[EC 1.1.3.22] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the oxidation of hypoxanthine to xanthine and of xanthine to uric acid, the final steps in the degradation of purines. It is an iron-molybdenum flavoprotein containing FAD. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, causes xanthinuria.
