| polarization |
Known from optics as a property of transverse waves; polarized light only oscillates in a single plane. Polarization in particle physics occurs when the spins of particles are aligned in a single direction. A particle beam is transversely polarized when the particle spins are aligned perpendicularly to the particle paths and longitudinally polarized when they are parallel to the beam direction. Polarization in accelerators can be influenced using spin rotators.
