| fistula |
A condition that results when an artery and adjacent vein become connected, allowing arterial blood to mix with venous blood. Fistulas usually result from trauma, such as a needle stick during a heart catheterization that inadvertently punctures both the artery and vein at the same time. Sometimes a fistula will heal spontaneously; other times, surgery is required (often performed under local anesthesia).
