tympanic cells Numerous groovelike depressions in the walls of the tympanic cavity, communicating with the tubal air cells.
Synonym: cellulae tympanicae, tympanic cells.
(05 Mar 2000)
type I cells Highly attentuated squamous cell's that form the gas-permeable epithelium lining the alveoli of the lungs.
Synonym: type I cells.
(05 Mar 2000)
type II cells Cuboidal cell's connected with the squamous pulmonary alveolar cell's and having in their cytoplasm lamellated bodies (cytosomes) that represent the source of the surfactant that coats the alveoli.
Synonym: granular pneumonocytes, type II cells.
(05 Mar 2000)
jurkat cells A cell line derived from human T-cell leukaemia and used to determine the mechanism of differential susceptibility to anti-cancer drugs and radiation.
(12 Dec 1998)
juxtaglomerular cells Cell's, located at the vascular pole of the renal corpuscle that secrete renin and form a component of the juxtaglomerular complex; they are modified smooth muscle cell's primarily of the afferent arteriole of the renal glomerulus.
Synonym: Goormaghtigh's cells.
(05 Mar 2000)
Tzanck cells Acantholytic epithelial cell's seen in the Tzanck test.
(05 Mar 2000)
kB-cells A cell line derived from a human carcinoma of the nasopharynx, used as an assay for antineoplastic agent.
(12 Dec 1998)
K cells Lymphocyte-like effector cells which mediate antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity. They kill antibody-coated target cells which they bind with their fc receptors.
(12 Dec 1998)
yolk cells Primitive embryonic cell's lying between the endoderm and mesoderm; they probably give rise to the endothelium of vitelline vessels.
(05 Mar 2000)
killer cells Lymphocyte-like effector cells which mediate antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity. They kill antibody-coated target cells which they bind with their fc receptors.
(12 Dec 1998)
killer cells, lymphokine-activated Cytolytic lymphocytes with the unique capacity of killing natural killer (nk)-resistant fresh tumour cells. They are interleukin-2-activated nk cells that have no MHC (major histocompatibility complex) restriction or need for antigen stimulation. Lak cells are used for adoptive immunotherapy in cancer patients.
(12 Dec 1998)
killer cells, natural Cells responsible for spontaneous cytotoxicity of a variety of tumour cells without prior immunization. These natural killer cells are found in non-immune humans and experimental animals and are thought by some to be the same as killer cells (killing by antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity), but they can also kill in the absence of antibody.
(12 Dec 1998)
Kulchitsky cells Cell's with granules that may be either argentaffinic or argyrophilic; the cell's, scattered throughout the digestive tract, are of several varieties and are believed to produce at least 20 different gastrointestinal hormones and neurotransmitters.
Synonym: enterochromaffin cells, Kulchitsky cells.
(05 Mar 2000)
kupffer cells Large star-shaped or pyramidal cells with a large oval nucleus and a small prominent nucleolus. These intensely phagocytic cells line the walls of the sinusoids of the liver and form a part of the reticuloendothelial system.
(12 Dec 1998)
labyrinth supporting cells Cells forming a framework supporting the organ of corti. Specific cells are those of claudius, deiters and hensen.
