1. 빠른 동통 : 쑤시고 날카로운 성질을 가지며, 주로 바늘로 찌르거나 칼로 베었을 때 생김. 2. 느린 동통 : 박동적이고 기분 나쁜 작열감이나, 둔통의 성질을 가지며, 일반적으로 조직의 손상에 의한 동통에 관여한다. 3. 통각은 거의 모든 신체 부위에 있고 순응성이 없고 자극이 없어질 때까지 계속 간다. 통각의 발생에는 적응 자극이 필요하지 않고 기계적 온열적 화학적 전기적 등 여하한 자극이라도 이것이 대단히 강하게 되어 생체에 유해하게 작용할 때에는 통증으로 느껴져 신체의 적신호로 중요한 의미를 갖는다.
