It provides guidance to users for finding information, using electronic services, and sending questions and comments. Portals provide a broad array of resources and services, including a directory of other Web sites, a facility to search for other sites, news, e-mail, phone and map information, and sometimes a community forum.

An opening allowing the microorganism to enter the host. Portals include body orifices, mucus membranes, or breaks in the skin. Portals also result from tubes placed in body cavities, such as urinary catheters, or from punctures produced by invasive procedures such as intravenous fluid replacement.
