The presence of air gas in the pleural cavity may be the result of trauma or may occur spontaneously, perhaps because of rupture of a congenital bleb. The air in the pleural space may not communicate with that in the lung, but in tensoin pneumothorax, air continues to leak from the lung into the pleural space. Air enters the pleural space on inspiration in tension pneumothorax but becomes trapped on expiration, resulting in increasing pressure in the pleural space. ...
