| visceral disease virus | <virology> Probably the most widespread of the Herpetoviridae group. Causes disease only in utero (leading to abortion or stillbirth or to various congenital defects), although can be opportunistic in the immunocompromised host. | Visna maedi virus | <virology> A retrovirus of sheep and goats. A member of the lentivirus subfamily related to HIV. First identified in Iceland when it was introduced by sheep imported from Germany and causes two diseases the most common, maedi, is a pulmonary infection (maedi is Icelandic for shortness of breath) and when it infects the nervous system, visna, a paralysis similar to multiple sclerosis (visna is Icelandic for wasting). | visna-maedi virus | A species of lentivirus, subgenus ovine-caprine lentiviruses (lentiviruses, ovine-caprine), that can cause chronic pneumonia (maedi), mastitis, arthritis, and encephalomyelitis (visna) in sheep. Maedi is a progressive pneumonia of sheep which is similar to but not the same as jaagsiekte (pulmonary adenomatosis, ovine).
