a necrotizing vasculitis affecting the venules of the skin, usually of the extremities, caused by deposition of circulating immune complexes and associated with infection, chronic disease, or drug administration; some cases are idiopathic. Manifestations are variable, the most common being palpable purpura; angioedema, urticaria, and deposition of fibrinoid material and cellular infiltrates also occur.
