sonogram A method of using sound waves to visualize the anatomy of a fetus and the surrounding amniotic fluid and placenta. Measurements taken from the ultrasound help determine the gestational age of the fetus, as well as find certain physical birth defects or abnormalities. Not all birth defects can be detected by ultrasound.

sonogram A computer picture of areas inside the body created when sound waves bounce off organs and other tissues. Also called ultrasonogram or ultrasound.

sonographer An allied health professional who has been specifically trained to perform ultrasound examinations. Many sonographers are certified by a registry of sonographers, provided they meet strict training requirements and pass examinations in basic ultrasound science and clinical applications.
