ventricular fibrillation Abnormally fast heart rhythm from rapid and irregular contractions of the lower chambers of the heart. This is the most common cause of death in the early hours of a heart attack. Automatic defibrillators can sense this rhythm and deliver a shock to the heart in attempts to restore a normal and stable heart rhythm.
