an acute variety caused by infection with Streptococcus pyogenes; it occurs in epidemics and is usually spread by droplets or in air, although it can also be spread by direct contact and in food. Characteristics include intense local hyperemia, sometimes with enlargement of cervical lymph nodes and a yellow exudate. Called also septic sore throat, streptococcal sore throat, and streptococcal tonsillitis.

an exotoxin, existing in several antigenically distinct types, produced by Streptococcus pyogenes; it causes fever, the rash of scarlet fever, organ damage, increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier, and alterations in immune response, including increased susceptibility to endotoxic shock and changes in T cell function. Formerly called erythrogenic toxin.
