monoclonal antibodies These are 'artificial' antibodies. They have many uses both for diagnostic purposes and in some instances as a mode of treatment. Monoclonal antibodies used as a treatment may for example destroy the blood cells that are causing myositis. A good example of this is Rituximab (Rituxan), which is a monoclonal antibody designed to destroy 'B' lymphocytes which are responsible for the tissue damage in Dermatomyositis.

These antibodies, all exactly alike, are mass-produced and designed to home in on target cancer cells. Monoclonal antibodies are products of new scientific techniques and may prove useful in both cancer diagnosis and treatment .
