Chemically it is calcium and magnesium oxide. Produced by high temperature heating calcitic or dolomitic limestone, which will replace the carbonate ion (CO 3 -- ) of the limestone with oxygen. However, the term is broadly applied in agriculture to any material containing calcium and magnesium in forms capable of correcting soil acidity.
