| Kinetoplastida |
an order of flagellate protozoa (class Zoomastigophorea, subphylum Mastigophora), many species of which are free living, although most are parasites of plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Kinetoplastids have one or two flagella arising from a depression in the cell body and usually contain a conspicuous kinetoplast located near the flagellar basal bodies. The order comprises two suborders: Bodonina and Trypanosomatina. Called also Protomastigida and Protomonadina.
