Autoimmune illnesses occur when the body reacts to it's own tissues. The disease is caused either by antibodies being made by 'B' lymphocytes (white cells in the blood) against the body's own tissues, or certain other white blood cells ('T' cells, natural killer (NK) cells) attack the tissues. In most autoimmune illnesses, the reason why this occurs is not known, however some people may be more susceptible than others (possible genetic link). ...
