| atrophic r. |
a chronic form of rhinitis that is nonallergic and noninfectious, marked by wasting of the mucous membrane and the glands. In the early stages there are small dry areas with crusting, either with viscid secretions or without secretions (see r. sicca). In later stages the nasal passages become enlarged and have a foul smell, progressing to ozena (q.v.). It is sometimes the result of trauma, and vascular damage by radiation therapy, environmental irritants, and disease has also been implicated.
