elongated "mountain chain", generally (but not always) located in the middle of an ocean. The ridge is an extensive boundary between two plates, where magma coming from the upper mantle differentiated to form new oceanic crust. Thus, additional surface is "accreted" to both plates when the ridge is active.

A long narrow upper section or crest; a long narrow chain of hills or mountains. An area of high ground separating two canyon formed by erosion on both sides. Ridges range in size from those between small gullies to the crest of an entire mountain range. Also called ridgeline.
