enzyme responsible for the synthesis of DNA from genomic RNA of a virus like HIV. Reverse transcripase can be used in a technique to amplify RNA targets. The extracted RNA specimen is subjected to reverse transcription to make complementary DNA (cDNA), which is then, in turn, amplified by PCR.
