The incorporation of gaseous molecular nitrogen, N 2 , into nitrogenous compounds. Abiotic fixation of N 2 occurs via lightning and photochemical conversion in the atmosphere. Biotic fixation of N 2 is done by specialized bacteria that construct the hemoglobin-like enzymes necessary to cleave the strong triple bond of molecular nitrogen.

| nitrous oxide |
Colorless gas, formula N 2 O, released by bacterial activity at the earth's surface. It has an atmospheric lifetime of about 160 years and is currently present at a level of about 330 ppb. Its atmospheric significance is that it is transported into the stratosphere, where its reaction with excited oxygen atoms (O 1 D) is the major source of active nitrogen; it is also a major greenhouse gas. In large amounts, it has anesthetic properties (laughing gas).

A nitrated derivative of cellulose. It is made into membrane filters of defined porosity, used to immobilize DNA, RNA or protein, which can then be probed with a labelled sequence or antibody. These filters have a variety of uses in molecular biology, particularly in nucleic acid hybridization experiments. Used extensively in the Southern and northern blotting procedures involving DNA and RNA.
