Formaldehyde earned notoriety through its widespread use as a component of urea formaldehyde insulation. It is an unstable compound usually used in aqueous solution, but which emits the highly irritating gaseous form of the compound. Used as a preservative in many types of products. Urea-formaldehyde glues emit formaldehyde vapors which can be a serious indoor air pollution problem (US EPA, 1988b).
