Synonym: musculi dorsi, dorsal muscles.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal nasal artery Origin, ophthalmic; external artery of the nose; distribution, skin of side of root of nose; anastomoses, angular artery.
Synonym: arteria dorsalis nasi, arteria nasi externa, dorsal artery of nose, external artery of nose.

dorsal nerve of clitoris The deep terminal branch of the pudendal, supplying especially the glans clitoridis after passing through the musculature of the urogenital diaphragm, to run along the dorsum of the clitoral shaft.
Synonym: nervus dorsalis clitoridis.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal nerve of penis The deep terminal branch of the pudendal which runs through the urogenital diaphragm giving branches, then runs along the dorsum of the penis, supplying the skin of the penis, the prepuce, the corpora cavernosa, and the glans.
Synonym: nervus dorsalis penis.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal nerve of scapula <anatomy, nerve> Arises from ventral primary rami of the fifth to seventh cervical nerves and passes downward to supply the levator scapulae and the rhomboideus major and minor muscles.
Synonym: nervus dorsalis scapulae, dorsal nerve of scapula, nerve to rhomboid, posterior scapular nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal nerves of toes Nerves supplying the skin of the dorsal aspect of the proximal and middle phalanges of the toes.
Synonym: nervi digitales dorsales pedis, dorsal nerves of toes.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal nucleus A column of large neurons located in the base of the posterior gray column of the spinal cord, extending from the first thoracic through the second lumbar segment; it gives rise to the dorsal spinocerebellar tract of the same side.
Synonym: nucleus thoracicus, Clarke's column, Clarke's nucleus, dorsal nucleus, nucleus dorsalis, Stilling's column, Stilling's nucleus.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal nucleus of trapezoid body A circumscript, bipartite cell group located ventrolaterally in the lower pontine tegmentum, immediately dorsal to the trapezoid body; the nucleus receives fibres from both the ipsilateral and contralateral cochlear nuclei, and contributes fibres to the lateral (auditory) lemniscus of both sides. It is believed to be prominently involved in the function of spatial localization of sound.
Synonym: nucleus dorsalis corporis trapezoidei, oliva superior, superior olivary nucleus, superior olive.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal nucleus of vagus The visceral motor nucleus located in the vagal trigone (ala cinerea) of the floor of the fourth ventricle. It gives rise to the parasympathetic fibres of the vagus nerve innervating the heart muscle and the smooth musculature and glands of the respiratory and intestinal tracts.
Synonym: nucleus dorsalis nervi vagi, dorsal motor nucleus of vagus, dorsal nucleus of vagus, dorsal vagal nucleus, nucleus alae cinereae.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal nucleus of vagus nerve The visceral motor nucleus located in the vagal trigone (ala cinerea) of the floor of the fourth ventricle. It gives rise to the parasympathetic fibres of the vagus nerve innervating the heart muscle and the smooth musculature and glands of the respiratory and intestinal tracts.

Synonym: dorsal plate of neural tube.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal position The posture of an individual lying face up.
(12 Dec 1998)
dorsal primary ramus of spinal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The smaller, posteriorly-directed major terminal branch (with the ventral primary ramus) of all 31 pairs of mixed spinal nerves, formed at the intervertebral foramen and turning abruptly posteriorly to divide into lateral and medial branches, both of which will supply the deep (true) muscles of the back. The medial branch (rami medialis ) of the dorsal primary ramus also supplies articular branches to the zygopophyseal joints and the periosteum of the vertebral arch. In the neck and upper back, the medial branch continues through the deep and superficial back muscles to supply overlying skin; in the lower back, the lateral branch does this. Nomina Anatomica lists dorsal primary rami as "rami dorsales" for each group of spinal nerves: 1) cervical (nervorum cervicalium ), 2) thoracic (nervorum thoracicorum ), 3) lumbar (nervorum lumbalium ), 4) sacral (nervorum sacralium ), and 5) coccygeal (nervi coccygei ).
Synonym: ramus dorsalis nervorum spinalium, ramus dorsalis, rami posteriores nervorum spinalium, dorsal branch, posterior primary division.
