| Cochin China diarrhoea | An obsolete term for tropical sprue. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| cochineal | The dried female insects, Coccus cacti, enclosing the young larvae, or the dried female insect, Dactylopius coccus, containing eggs and larvae, from which coccinellin is obtained; used as a red colouring agent and a stain. See: carmine. Synonym: coccinella, coccus. Origin: O.Sp. Cochinilla, wood louse, fr. G. Kokkinos, berry (05 Mar 2000) |
| cochlea | The part of the internal ear that is concerned with hearing. It forms the anterior part of the labyrinth, is conical, and is placed almost horizontally anterior to the vestibule. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cochlear | <anatomy> Of or pertaining to the cochlea. (18 Nov 1997) |
| cochlear aqueduct | A channel containing perilymph passing through the temporal bone, connecting the scala tympani of the cochlea to the subarachnoid space. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cochlear area | The area inferior to the transverse crest of the fundus of the internal acoustic meatus through which the filaments of the cochlear nerve pass to enter the cochlea; forms the base of the cone-shaped modiolus about which the cochlear canal spirals. See: base of modiolus. Synonym: area cochleae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cochlear branch of labyrinthine artery | <anatomy, artery> Terminal branch (with vestibular branch) of labyrinthine artery; it divides into multiple fine branches which penetrate canals of modiolus to supply the plexus of the spiral lamina and basilar membrane. Synonym: ramus cochlearis arteriae labyrinthi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cochlear canal | The winding tube of the bony labyrinth which makes two and a half turns about the modiolus of the cochlea; it is divided incompletely into two compartments by a winding shelf of bone, the bony spiral lamina. Synonym: canalis spiralis cochleae, Rosenthal's canal, spiral canal of cochlea. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cochlear canaliculus | A minute canal in the temporal bone that passes from the cochlea inferiorly to open in front of the medial side of the jugular fossa. It contains the perilymphatic duct. Synonym: canaliculus cochleae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cochlear diseases | Diseases of the cochlea, the part of the inner ear that is concerned with hearing. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cochlear duct | Spiral tube in the bony canal of the cochlea, lying on its outer wall between the scala vestibuli and scala tympani. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cochlear ganglion | An elongated ganglion of bipolar sensory nerve cell bodies on the cochlear part of the vestibulocochlear nerve in the spiral canal of the modiolus; each ganglion cell gives rise to a peripheral process that passes between the layers of the bony spiral lamina to the organ of Corti, and a central axon that enters the hindbrain as a component of the inferior (cochlear) root of the eighth nerve. Synonym: ganglion spirale cochleae, auditory ganglion, cochlear ganglion, Corti's ganglion, spiral cochlear ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cochlear hair cell | <anatomy> The sound sensing cell of the inner ear. The cells have modified ciliary structures (hairs), that enable them to produce an electrical (neural) response to mechanical motion caused by the effect of sound waves on the cochlea. Frequency is detected by the position of the cell in the cochlea and amplitude by the magnitude of the disturbance. (18 Nov 1997) |
| cochlear hair cells | Sensory cell's in the organ of Corti in synaptic contact with sensory as well as efferent fibres of the cochlear (auditory) nerve; from the apical end of each cell about 100 stereocilia extend from the surface and make contact with the tectorial membrane. Synonym: Corti's cells. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cochlear implant | An electronic device implanted under the skin with electrodes in the middle ear on the promontory or cochlear window or in the inner ear in the cochlea to create sound sensation in total sensory deafness. A microphone behind the ear feeds sound waves into a microprocessor carried on the body, which analyzes the data and sends information back to a radio transmitter that triggers the electrodes in the middle or inner ear to produce the appropriate electrical pulses. This does not enable the patient actually to hear, but rather to distinguish different sounds according to the neural sensation they produce. The first successful cochlear implant was performed in 1978 in Melbourne, Australia. Such devices are among many implanted aids which have been made possible by the advent of microchip technology. Synonym: cochlear prosthesis. (05 Mar 2000) |
