cholesterin 1. <biochemistry> A pearly, fatlike steroid alcohol, C27H45OH, crystallizing in the form of leaflets or plates from dilute alcohol and found in animal fats and oils, in bile, blood, brain tissue, milk, yolk of egg, myelin sheaths of nerve fibres, the liver, kidneys and adrenal glands.
It constitutes a large part of the most frequently occurring type of gallstones and occurs in atheroma of the arteries, in various cysts and in carcinomatous tissue. Most of the bodys cholesterol is synthesised in the liver, but some is absorbed from the diet. It is a precursor of bile acids and is important in the synthesis of steroid hormones.
2. <chemical> A commercial preparation of cholesterol is used as a pharmaceutic aid.
Synonym: cholesterin.
Origin: Gr. Stereos = solid

  • Cholic Acids - 새창 The 3 alpha,7 alpha,12 alpha-trihydroxy-5 beta-cholanic acid family of bile acids in man, usually conjugated with glycine or taurine. They act as detergents to solubilize fats for intestinal absorption, are reabsorbed by the small intestine, and are used as cholagogues and choleretics.
Synonyms : Acids, Cholalic, Acids, Cholic
  • Choline - 새창 A basic constituent of lecithin that is found in many plants and animal organs. It is important as a precursor of acetylcholine, as a methyl donor in various metabolic processes, and in lipid metabolism.
Synonyms : 2-Hydroxy-N, N, N-trimethylethanaminium, Choline Bitartrate, Choline Chloride, Choline Citrate, Choline O-Sulfate, Bitartrate, Choline, Chloride, Choline, Choline O Sulfate, Citrate, Choline, O-Sulfate, Choline
  • Choline Deficiency - 새창 A condition produced by a deficiency of CHOLINE in animals. Choline is known as a lipotropic agent because it has been shown to promote the transport of excess fat from the liver under certain conditions in laboratory animals. Combined deficiency of choline (included in the B vitamin complex) and all other methyl group donors causes liver cirrhosis in some animals. Unlike compounds normally considered as vitamins, choline does not serve as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions. (From Saunders Dictionary & Encyclopedia of Laboratory Medicine and Technology, 1984)
Synonyms : Deficiency, Choline, Choline Deficiencies, Deficiencies, Choline
  • Choline Dehydrogenase - 새창 An enzyme bound to the inner mitochondrial membrane that catalyzes the oxidation of CHOLINE to BETAINE.
    Synonyms : Dehydrogenase, Choline
  • Choline Kinase - 새창 An enzyme that is active in the first step of choline phosphoglyceride (lecithin) biosynthesis by catalyzing the phosphorylation of choline to phosphorylcholine in the presence of ATP. Ethanolamine and its methyl and ethyl derivatives can also act as acceptors. EC 2.7.1.32.
Synonyms : Choline Phosphokinase, Choline Transphosphatase, ATP, Kinase, Choline, Phosphokinase, Choline, Transphosphatase, ATP Choline

cholera A serious and often deadly infectious disease of the small intestine. Symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting, and the resulting dehydration can cause death. This disease is rare in richer nations but is frequently found in poor areas where treated drinking water is not available. Outbreaks often occur either after flooding because the water supply becomes contaminated, or following periods of warm sea surface temperatures. (see copepods)
